Health Risks of Blinking Light

Light Benefits

It is widely reported that blinking lights can cause the onset of epileptic seizures, but there are also additional health problems associated with blinking lights, and replacing light globes.

Photosensitive Epilepsy

Photosensitive epilepsy is not a common form of epilepsy, as it is only reported in about 1 in 20 cases of epilepsy. There are various triggers for the onset of seizures for an individual with photosensitive epilepsy. Including but not limited to-

The three main variables related to the onset of a seizure is the frequency, duration and intensity of the light. Modern compact fluorescent lights regularly flash at around 20,000 times every second, while fluorescent strip lights flash about 100 times every second (source- Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency). While functioning at this optimum level there is no risk of triggering an epileptic seizure. The issue lies when there is a electrical flickering light problem and a bulb starts to flash more intensely, and at a decreased rate.

There is no panacea, or cure for photosensitive epilepsy, so individuals are recommended to avoid stimuli that may cause seizures. By replacing your light globes with compact fluorescent lighting and having regular light maintenance, companies, organisations and individuals can decrease the risk of causing the onset of seizures for those who suffer from photosensitive epilepsy.

Mercury Poisoning

Mercury poisoning is a little known risk that is involved with changing fluorescent light bulbs. Mercury poisoning (also known as hydragyria or mercurialism) is an acute disease that affects the nervous system, of individuals exposed to mercury. Common symptoms include sensory impairment resulting in decreased vision, hearing and speech.Mercury in liquid form is not readily absorbed through the integumentary system by skin contact, as many believe. Instead it is absorbed through the respiratory system in its gaseous state.

A gaseous mix of Argon and Mercury is encased in a fluorescent bulb when its circuit is completed and it is lit. But when the bulb is not lit, and there is not a constant flow of negatively charged electrons running through the circuit, the mercury returns to its liquid state. Consequently, there is an increased risk of mercury poisoning if a light bulb is broken a short time after it has been running, as the mercury has not had time to cool and return to its liquid state. Further adding to the danger is the fact that when it is in its gaseous state it is not visible to the human eye.

It is therefore recommended that if a fluorescent bulb is broken, it is disposed of in an environmentally safe manner. By using the professionals at Globe Jockeys to change blinking lights, and perform lighting maintenance the risk of Mercury poisoning to yourself and your staff will be decreased.

Electrical Shock and Cardiac Arrest

If due care is not exercised when changing light bulbs there is an obvious risk for electrical shock, which can be a significant cause for cardiac arrest. The heart is the central organ of the circulatory system and is situated in the center of the chest. It is a complex organ that is stimulated by tiny electrical charges originating from nodes in the upper left region of the chest. These tiny charges stimulate the muscles in the heart to contract and release, thereby pushing blood through the circulatory system.

When the body is exposed to a high voltage electrical source it can cause the hearts electrical pattern to change and send the heart into a dangerous state. The massive electrical shock can cause the heart to stop contracting completely, ultimately leading to death. The electrical action works the in same manner as a defibrillator, except in an uncontrolled measure and environment. Burns to the extremities and torso can also lead to irreversible nerve damage. Globe Jockeys has electricians experienced in light globe replacement, and have the ability to maintain electrical circuits in a safe manner that eliminates the risk of injury to you, or your staff. Additionally Globe Jockeys perform sustainable fluorescent light disposal so the environment is not harmed either.
